Sustainable Building Techniques - Insulated Concrete Formwork
Insulated Concrete Formwork is a fast, cost-effective and environmentally friendly building system.
The sustainable, insulated concrete formwork system of construction is fast to construct yet offers levels of performance potentially better than slower, more traditional approaches to building. This was method was advantageous to the client because he wanted to construct the walls himself. Self-building was made possible because the system is based on large lightweight hollow polystyrene block components that interlock together without intermediate bedding materials to provide a formwork system into which concrete is poured. Once set, the concrete becomes a high strength structure and the formwork remains in place as thermal insulation, with U-values down to 0.11 W/m²k – ideal for zero energy buildings.
We, therefore, consider this a “green” modern method of construction using materials to build an extension which will last the life of the building and can then be recycled for ongoing sustainability. We produced a full set of architect drawings for both planning and building regulations for the client to go on and extend.
